Feeling Lonely? Here Is What You Should Do

Feeling lonely is one of the worst feelings imaginable. It can make you feel isolated and alone, even when you are surrounded by people. And it can be especially tough during the holidays when everyone seems to be celebrating with friends and family. But don’t worry, there are things you can do to help ease the loneliness.

Meet old friends

Reach out to people from your past. They might be the ideal people to help you get through this tough time.

There are a lot of great ways to meet old friends. You could reach out to them on social media, or even better, in person. Why not set up a get-together for coffee or lunch? You can catch up on each other’s lives and reminisce about good times.

Volunteer

One of the best ways to deal with loneliness is by helping others. Volunteering gives you a sense of belonging and makes you feel like part of a community in an otherwise lonely time. Plus, it’s easy! You can volunteer e.g. at a local animal shelter or soup kitchen.

Volunteering can be a great way to meet other people, and doing it as a group can be even more fun.

Join a support group

Sometimes you just need other people who understand what you’re going through and can relate to your situation. There are a lot of great support groups out there where you can meet people who have been through what you’re going through, and get advice from them that will help you get through it. You can find support groups e.g. for people with similar health issues or struggles you’re going through, for parents who have lost a child, for people who have recently moved to a new city, and much more.

Make an effort to be social

If you usually spend most of your time alone, but you want to get out there and be more social, it can feel scary. But if you just force yourself to be social, it will get easier. Try setting a goal for yourself e.g. that you’ll go to one social event a week, and stick to it. Remember that people are afraid of what they don’t know.

Read self-help books

You might feel like you don’t want to read a novel at the moment, so try reading some self-help books. They are designed to help people like you, and reading them can give you some great advice that will help you get through this tough time.

Travel

Often, when you’re feeling lonely, it can seem like it will never end. But, the truth is that loneliness only lasts as long as you let it. It’s important that you stay active and do the things you love, even if that sometimes means getting away from the place you feel lonely in. Traveling can help you do that because it forces you to meet new people and opens your eyes to the world outside of your comfort zone.

Feeling lonely can be really tough, but there are things you can do to help ease the pain. You could reach out to old friends, volunteer, join a support group, or make an effort to be more social. And if all of that fails, you could always try traveling.
